Hormones are a bitch, aren’t they?! Well, at least for me they are! I am now in my mid-30’s and due to fabulous hormone imbalances, my skin breaks out worse than it did when I was in high school…HIGH SCHOOL! At least in high school I didn’t have crow’s feet to combat too, right?! What the heck!
I have tried so many different skin care lines to find a solution for both moisturizing my skin as well as helping to combat breakouts. Some dry my skin out. Some leave my face feeling gross and oily. None seem to be as magical as they promise.
A few months ago, I stumbled upon an article discussing Bakuchiol, which is breaking into the skin line scene as a natural alternative for retinol.
It got me curious, what the heck is Bakuchiol (pronounced: back-uh-heel) and could it help my skin?!
Bakuchiol is an extract from a plant in India, known as the babchi or psoralea corylifolia plant. This vegan alternative to retinol is making waves in the skin-care world because unlike traditional retinol products, Bakuchiol does not cause red, dry and irritated skin.
Bakuchiol has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties meaning goodbye breakouts and redness! It has been shown to help prevent fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating cell-turnover and increasing the production of collagen! And, unlike retinol, Bakuchiol does not dry out your skin or cause redness.
After researching and reading a few articles, I decided to try it out. I am weird about going all in on skincare lines until I know they work. I’ve spent far too much money over the years on products that don’t actually work, and half used tubes end up being tossed!
I ordered a bottle of Bakuchiol and have started using it as part of my morning and evening skin-care routine. I use two pumps twice a day, and end up with an amount a little larger than the size of a pea. The serum is super light-weight, and thankfully, does not have a greasy finish. It feels a little bit like Tea Tree Oil at first, not harsh stinging but a little tingly and dries quickly. It makes my skin feel moisturized but not oily, which I love. After the first few days, I started noticing redness disappear and breakouts seemed to be going away. I didn’t really pay much attention to it, but after the first week or so, I started receiving compliments from my girlfriends saying my skin had a healthier glow. I am not sure if it is solely from the Bakuchiol or a combination of using it and drinking a daily Matcha latte, but I have actually begun seeing a difference in my overall skin as well, I feel like I have more color in my cheeks and my skin looks healthier! Plus, it is not dry and itchy. The breakouts are still happening, but I think that is due to internal inflammation and hormones, not my skin care habits.
I am really happy with the results and the “glow” it is giving me, so I plan on continuing to use it! I might try out a few different brands just to see what is out there. This time, I bought, IMGN Dermatology Beyond Retinol Bakuchiol Serum from Amazon, because busy mom life and being far away from the city means Amazon is my life line! I really recommend trying it out! I would love to hear what your thoughts are on this new “superstar” product everyone is raving about!
